Meet one of our final year apprentices, Josh…

Josh, engineering apprentice who is part of the first intake of apprentices to join General Dynamics UK, tells us what its like to be a software engineer working on the newly-awarded £330 million Evolve to Open contract.

Josh is currently on the fourth and final year of his engineering apprenticeship, due to finish in September 2017. He decided to join the General Dynamics UK apprenticeship programme following a two-week work experience within the Company during his time at college. During his work experience, Josh was involved with network bridging.

On joining the programme, Josh was based within the General Dynamics Land Systems–UK System Integration team, working on vehicle control and undertaking simulation of the software for nine months. He then joined the Electronic Architecture team, working on cabling routes for variants on the AJAX programme.

For the fourth block of his scheme, Josh joined the General Dynamics Mission Systems–UK Bowman team, working within the system integration lab, conducting regression testing. He also had the opportunity to work on research and development de-risk work for the EvO bid – now a £330 million contract awarded by the UK Ministry of Defence, to develop the next-generation battlefield network for British Army.

Josh spent a year of the programme within the BCIP team in a software engineering role initialising the Bowman terminals and within the team which provides a replacement Bowman Service for COTS hardware.

As an additional project, Josh helped with the development of an iPad and iPhone app for the opening of the EDGE UK – an initative to provide a physical and virtual environment for collaboration between industry, academia and government. The project involved creating an animated application for the devices, to virtually cut the ribbon through the app during the opening ceremony.

“The apprenticeship programme has helped me to get my foot in the door with four years’ work experience, having a positive influence on future job opportunities.”

Josh has now completed NVQ Level 3: installation and commissioning of electronic systems, and is due to complete his HNC in electrical/electronic engineering this summer at Newport and District Group Training Association. In addition to this, Josh is currently studying a BSc (Hons) Computer Science course at the Open University, due to complete the course at the end of 2018.

Recently, he joined the EvO team as a software engineer within the MANAGE product area. Following the completion of his apprenticeship, Josh is hoping to gain a software engineering role within the EvO team.
