The General Dynamics UK Research Foundation is an integral part of the Company. The Foundation exists to ensure that the Company, as a leading provider of integrated security and defence solutions in the UK and abroad, plays its part in stimulating and enabling informed, open debate on the many issues arising from changes in the contemporary and future global security and defence environment, and in driving out the implications for policy-makers, customers, and for industry.
The Research Foundation’s headline activity is its practical support to periodic conferences held under the ‘Whither Warfare’ banner to generate debate of topical security, defence and resilience issues and derive a practical outcome from that debate. The conferences are conducted in partnership with a policy/practitioner/academic sponsor and can vary in scale from single or a series of small workshops to large-scale conferences held over two-days. The conferences have an established, high reputation and attract wide participation from policy makers, practitioners, academics, industry players and acknowledged national and international experts keen to present their views and participate in discussion with an informed audience from across the security and defence community.
A sub-set of the Research Foundation’s role is to promote understanding of security and defence issues amongst General Dynamics UK employees relevant to their business. Among other things: General Dynamics UK employees are encouraged to attend conferences as part of their broader education; the intranet library provides access to current doctrine publications from UK, the US and NATO; six-monthly operational briefings are organised; the Foundation lead/contribute to the drafting and publication of Company White Papers; business units are able to use the offer of a Whither Warfare activity to engage a customer in tackling a particular issue of shared interest.
